The film starring Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson and Morgan Freeman detailed the extensive efforts experts took to fit her with a prosthetic tail. By the time the credits roll and you see documentary footage of Winter's real crew of rescuers, you'll feel just as genuinely touched by the story of a remarkable dolphin who's a true survivor. Thanks to its sweet young stars, seasoned veterans, and compelling storyline, Dolphin Tale is, in the tradition of The Black Stallionand Secretariat, the sort of animal-themed film that's about the genuine love and friendship that can exist between animals and humans. ![]() Kris Kristofferson also pops up as Connick's sage, sea-loving father. All of the supporting actors are on top form - broody Connick, who treats audiences to an impromptu sax solo the always kind and wise Freeman and Ashley Judd, who plays Sawyer's hardworking single mother. The friendship between Hazel and Sawyer is refreshingly free of preteen romance or cooties it's completely focused on their kindred interest in Winter and the other rescued animals. Winter, who is in fact "played by" Winter, is hard to resist, as are the two adorable up-and-comers who play the lead kids. This film is a reminder of why movies that feature non-talking animals are so much more entertaining than the gimmicky comedies centering on talking pets. ![]() ![]()

After a long journey, the Queen fell asleep during their show. In July 1976, they were invited by First Lady Betty Ford to perform in the East Room of the White House in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and President Gerald Ford during the country's bicentennial celebration. Over the next few years, Captain and Tennille released a string of hit singles mostly from their first two albums Love Will Keep Us Together (US #2, 1975) and Song Of Joy (US #9, 1976) including "The Way I Want to Touch You" (US #4), "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" (US #3), "Shop Around" (US #4), and "Muskrat Love" (US #4). Two of their other hit singles were the Sedaka co-writes "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" and "You Never Done It Like That". The duo successfully mined the Sedaka songbook a number of times over their chartmaking career. Tennille paid tribute to Sedaka in the recording when she sang the overdub "Sedaka is back" at the end of the song. It sold over 1 million copies and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA on July 1, 1975. Their first hit single, a rendition of Neil Sedaka's and Howard Greenfield's "Love Will Keep Us Together", reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart nine weeks after its 1975 debut, and went on to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year. This led to a recording contract with A&M Records. They started to become popular in the Los Angeles area, and their early version of the Tennille-penned "The Way I Want to Touch You" became popular on a local radio station. Realizing their collaborative potential when the tour was over, Tennille and Dragon began performing as a duo at the now-defunct Smokehouse Restaurant in Encino, California. She toured with them for a year, and has since been known as The Beach Boys' one and only "Beach Girl". Reading through the Zune forums, I came across a very helpful postfrom user Khu entitled "10 ways to reduce your Zune-related stress." In that post, he suggests using a program called Mp3Tag to edit metadata (such as song order) before you fire up the Zune software (which does a nice job of auto-importing songs from My Music and any other folder you choose into your Zune library). The inherent subjectivity of such an idea makes it hard to properly discuss unless we’re all on the same page about what it is we’re talking about. But with the demonstrable benefits to taking psilocybin, there has been a corresponding relaxing of policy that has led to a flourishing of research in the field over the last twenty years. Psilocybin only really re-enters the modern consciousness in the 50s and 60s, which led to a boom in experimentation and research before falling afoul of American drug laws. While there was a long history of these practices pre-Columbus, the Spanish tried to put an end to pagan practices and forced these practices underground. We have established that psychedelic mushrooms were important for religious rituals, which makes it a little surprise to see the modern usage so heavily tied to mysticism and spiritual experiences. While this wasn’t well received by historians for a long time, there is a direct throughline from this manuscript to Wasson’s seminal 1957 essay “Seeking the Magic Mushroom” that put psilocybin squarely into the zeitgeist. We likely have a 16th-century Spanish Franciscan friar named Bernardino de Sahagún to thank for the modern interest boom in psychedelics-his anthropological studies in Mexico included the usage of “teonanacatl”, the sacred mushroom of the indigenous peoples. Hallucinogenic drugs in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures. We’ll start by looking at a few studies that describe this historical context, and that also provide a bridge forward to our modern moment where mushrooms are becoming evermore popular. There, they have a long and storied history of usage in religious ceremonies and mystical experiences. While psilocybin mushrooms grow naturally across the globe, their major pre-modern usage was amongst the various peoples of Mesoamerica. We have a number of articles to discuss today, so let’s dive in! History of Usage While things like ‘mystical experiences’ can seem hard to quantify or understand through analytical research, the growing body of study being done into mushrooms can’t help but show these effects when they do occur-and the powerful benefits to be had from a mystical experience of your own. The connection between psychedelics and spiritual or mystical experiences has long held, and that naturally makes today’s psychonauts curious about the history of their practice. ![]() While our modern usage of psychedelics can sometimes feel like a cultural relic of the 1960s, they have a long history of consumption in Mesoamerican religious ceremonies and practices. ![]() ![]() |
